Shirley Kaplan: The Creative Process

Shirley Kaplan uses color and line to create an arena of figurative interaction. She works intuitively allowing abstract forms of heightened color to appear and build upon one another. Images evolve that depict the activated world and impulse of performance and life. From her early years in Paris to today her paintings are a visual diary of lived experience showing aspects of the worlds of the circus, cabaret, theatre, and festivals. The sidelines of a cabaret hall and the artificial glamor and onstage atmosphere evoke a feeling of a time and place. She works primarily in oil and over the years has created paintings, wooden cities, masks, drawings, portraits, set designs, and projections sometimes using a combination of other materials.
