Syracuse University MFA Thesis Exhibition

Curated by Evan Starling Davis.

Navigating and blurring of lines between theory and practice, this exhibition seamlessly maps critical themes of identity, public and private memory, transformation, as well as the impact of sociocultural and political structures imposed on the personal experience. The included work details the nuances of process and praxis—emphasizing the importance of understanding how creation can embody an uncanny duality for the emerging and established artist. At its core, and present throughout the entirety of the exhibition, creation can be interpreted as a reclamation of remembrance, both a tangible technology towards tracing and documenting memory but also an unveiling of the fragments of our remembered worlds. Despite working across different genres and media—painting, photography, sculpture, film, animation, and performance—this amalgamation of memory within the exhibition’s vision, its art, and its artifacts, not only share an intent to interrogate and redefine dominant narratives related to the human experience (within each artist’s respective cultural lens) but also reimagine narrative by how creation materializes within time and space.
