Deborah Yasinsky
CUNY – Lehman College

Deborah Yasinsky is a Bronx based artist. Her work explores issues of childhood, memory, nostalgia, vulnerability, and environmentalism. Deborah explores relationships, childhood and parenting. The work forms a visual liturgy, representing the hopes and fears a parent has for their child. The fragility and vulnerability of a child’s existence and the celebratory nature of parenting are intertwined in her work. She utilizes recycled non-traditional materials, including fabrics referencing her early training in textile design. Her video animations are narratives of childhood, often replaying fragmented memories and experiences. The figure is often set in nature amidst flora and fauna, reminiscent of her own childhood exploring Inwood, NYC, it’s parks, the Hudson River and public spaces of the region. Inspired by medieval manuscripts, and Victorian motifs and symbolism. Deborah incorporates painting, drawing, assemblage, and animation into her practice.

Deborah grew up in NYC.  She received her BA in Fine Arts, from YU an AAS in Textile Design from FIT, an MS, Ed in Museum Education from Bank Street College and is currently an MFA in painting candidate at Lehman College, CUNY. Deborah has exhibited at Dominican University, Local Project Art Space, Trestle Online Gallery, Greenpoint Gallery, 14th Street Y Gallery, Urban Studio Unbound, Blue Door Gallery, Pubic Appliance, YAW, Purchase College PC4, and YoHo Artists. Deborah lives and works in the Bronx. She is Curator of Education at Lehman College Art Gallery.
