A luminary of the Astoria, Queens music scene, singer-songwriter Nelly DuBarry will perform a set of her powerful and haunting work.
“Queens native Nelly DuBarry combines the sardonic mumble of folk rock with the sharp jangle of post punk. If Siouxsie Sioux were a grunge singer, or David Bowie were Tom Waits, but also a woman, you’d get something approaching her sound. Her voice has not forgotten the cascading woes and panic of city existence. Now she’s here to tell her self-aware harrowing tales of living to pay rent, paying to do yoga, and dying to go to sleep. Full of both dark humor and real, wondrous sorrow, Nelly DuBarry’s music soothes as it bleeds, chuckling gently with its listener. Playing acoustic guitar with the accompaniment of electric guitarist John Keegan, Nelly performs at various venues in and around Astoria, Queens. She is also organizing The Venus Envy Music Festival, the first of its kind in Astoria, showcasing the musical talents of local female artists.”
